What Is Study Technology?

Learning How to Learn

Have you ever read something several times without understanding it? Have you completed a class but struggled to use what you learned?

Many people are taught what to study without receiving much instruction in how to study.

Study Technology is a system of learning methods designed to help people recognize barriers to studying, understand what they are learning, and apply that knowledge in everyday life.

Developed by L. Ron Hubbard, Study Technology is used in educational programs offered through Applied Scholastics and its licensed organizations.

At Sia Waye Academy, we introduce these methods to students, parents, educators, and adults who want to strengthen their study skills.

Learning Is More Than Memorizing

Learning is not simply remembering words or passing a test. It also involves understanding ideas and being able to use what you have learned.

Study Technology emphasizes three important areas:

Recognizing Barriers to Study

Sometimes a person becomes confused, loses interest, or has difficulty following what they are studying.

Study Technology teaches specific approaches for recognizing and addressing barriers that can interfere with learning.

Understanding Words and Concepts

Words are building blocks of understanding.

An unfamiliar or misunderstood word can make a sentence, paragraph, or entire subject difficult to follow.

Study Technology places special emphasis on identifying words that are not fully understood and learning their meanings.

Demonstration and Application

Being able to repeat information does not always mean that you understand it.

Using examples, objects, demonstrations, and practical exercises can help learners develop a clearer understanding of ideas and how they may be used.

Becoming a More Independent Learner

One of the central aims of Study Technology is to help people take greater responsibility for their own learning.

Instead of depending entirely on someone else to explain every difficulty, learners practice recognizing where their understanding has broken down and taking steps to address it.

These skills are intended to help people approach unfamiliar subjects with greater confidence and independence.
